Having a Heart for God
Izak J. Bester
There are so many of God’s children who are SO BUSY IN THE KINGDOM, yet not producing the Divine harvest the Lord
planned and purposed for their lives. So many of the Lord’s children are led on the wrong track, and will never produce the
harvest the Lord intended for them to have. The Apostle Paul was a perfect example of this. He lived an exemplary life. He was
an ardent scholar of the bible (Torah). He loved the Lord with all of his heart, yet he missed the very purpose God had in mind
for him. It was only after he met with the Lord Jesus Christ that he came to the realization how perfectly wrong he was. How
perfectly he was led astray by the devil on a course that looked like the real, but was simply a diabolical diversion to prevent
him from becoming an Apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ. Had he not had an encounter with the Word – the Lord Jesus – then
he would never have discovered the Divine purpose for his life. Today we just marvel as we still learn from the subsequent
revelations the Lord gave him about the Word – the Lord Jesus Christ.
The basis of our teaching today is Ephesians 5:6–11(NIV) “Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such
things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them. For you were once
darkness, but now you are the light of the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness,
righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but
rather expose them.”
The Message translation reads, “Don’t let yourselves get taken in by religious smooth talk. God gets furious with people who
are filled with religious sales talk, but want nothing to do with Him. Don’t even hang around people like that. You groped your
way through that murk once, but no longer. You’re out in the open now. The bright light of Christ makes your way plain, so no
more stumbling around. Get on with it! The good, the right, the true. These are the actions appropriate for daylight hours.
Figure out what will please Christ, and then do it. Don't waste your time on useless work, mere busy work, the barren
pursuits of darkness. Expose these things for the sham they are.”
The Modern KJ bible of verse 10 says, “Walk as children of light, for the fruit of the spirit is in all goodness and righteousness
and truth, proving what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness.”
Our topic today is having a heart for God. In human terms, if I have a “heart” for someone, that means I have positive thoughts
of wanting to help and please that person, which is what the above verses in Ephesians are describing. The Webster’s
Dictionary describes the heart as, “The seat of the affections and passions, as of love, joy, grief, enmity, courage, pleasure.” It
continues to say, “The seat of the understanding; as an understanding heart; The seat of the will; hence, secret purposes,
intentions or designs, secret meaning; real intention; to be zealous, ardent or solicitous about a thing.”
To put this together we can say having a heart for God is to have affection, passion, love, concern,
purpose, and intention for Him there where the seat of our true understanding lies. Having a heart
for God means that we will place HIS will, HIS plan and HIS purposes for our lives ABOVE what we
will and plan for ourselves.
That means that when we have a heart for God, we need to come to a place where we will have to leave certain things
behind in our lives, because if we have a heart for God, we won’t be busy with the works of darkness. What is interesting to
note is that the bible talks about the works of darkness not only as demon-infested people and their actions, but here as
“useless works”, “Mere busy work.” When we have a heart for God, it is in Christ and through Christ Jesus that God will reveal
to us the destiny that He has chosen for us. When we discover the destiny that He has chosen for us, we go after that with
everything we have. We need to become totally one-track minded in pursuit of that destiny, because the devil will bring a lot of
sidetracks into our lives that are cleverly designed to keep us away from God’s destiny.
It can be likened to two rail tracks running parallel for a while. For all practical purposes they seem to be going in the same
direction, but the true reality is that only one of those tracks will lead us to the Lord Jesus Christ, and the destiny that each of
us have in Him. The devil will keep you busy with a lot of things that are totally unimportant, and these things might even be
cleverly cloaked with a form of holiness to them in order to purposefully deceive you. However, they will just be a diversion
from the enemy to present something very similar BUT IT IS NOT THE REAL THING – IT WILL NOT BE THE DESTINY THAT
GOD HAS IN STORE FOR US. In Mat 7:21-23 the Lord Jesus warns us against this very thing when He said, “Not every one
that saith to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father who is in heaven.
Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out demons? and
in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess to them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work
A person might come to the end of his life only to realize that all of his life’s work was in vain because he pursued a destiny
that was not of God. What a sad day that will be. To be there, facing the Great King of Kings, presenting to Him on a platter our
wasted life, and to see the disappointment on His face, only to realize IT IS TOO LATE – we can never go back and try again.
That is exactly why the Lord says being unfruitful in what you do is likened to works of darkness in this world. When we grope
in darkness we are in darkness. When we do not understand first of all who we are in Christ Jesus, we will understand
nothing of God. It is only when we come to know who we are in Christ that we can come to know the will of the Father, and
come to know who we are supposed to be, and what our destiny is supposed to be.
We must understand that we are either for God’s Kingdom or against it. Many Christians and many
churches erroneously think that because they believe in Jesus, and are doing “Christian” works and
sponsoring all kinds of “Christian” programs that they are for Him. Yet Jesus says in Mat 12:30 you
either help me gather or you scatter. How many of our works and/or our programs are actually
gathering? We can never take a neutral stand in the Kingdom of God. If we are not actively helping
the Lord to gather, then we are actively helping satan to scatter – no matter how “righteous or holy or
religious” what we are doing might appear. When we choose our own way, follow our own desires,
create our own destiny for our lives or our churches based on what we want, we step off the right
track and on to that parallel path that looks good and feels good, yet is not producing a harvest for
the Lord of the Harvest. We either portray the light of God when we walk in the fullness of God’s
destiny for our lives, or else we walk in darkness and portray satan and his authority in our lives.
And there are unfortunately many, many Christians who are doing the latter today. Having a heart
for God means that we will pursue the things of God, not the things of ourselves.
When we pursue the things of God, having a heart for God, it starts from a foundation, and this foundation originates with and
is built upon our relationship with our Savior - A personal relationship with Him. It starts when we know who we are in Christ
Jesus. Eph 1:11 says, “It is in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for.” (MSG) When you know who you
are in Christ Jesus, you will discover what you have been birthed for, and God will then send you on the right track. There is no
more time to just merrily live your life as you have lived it up till now.
The Holy Spirit is in the process of getting the hearts of His nation and His people back from where the devil has darkened the
light. The bible says that Jesus is our light – not Mohammed, not Buddha, no one else, but Jesus Christ! The bible says don’t
waste your time on useless work, mere busy work. In other words, being very busy, but never being able to show His Kingdom
In Matthew 9:38 the Lord Jesus introduces us to a new dimension of the Father’s character. He calls Him the Lord of the
Harvest. If you live an unproductive life, you will not produce a Divine harvest. Not producing a Divine harvest is robbing the
Lord of the glory the harvest a productive life will produce and that is due to Him. We must understand that there will always be
a harvest. The harvest is either a good harvest, or it is a ruined harvest. Either way, there will always be a harvest, and that
harvest will either be for the glory of the Lord of the Harvest, or it will be for the kingdom of darkness.
While we have the opportunity through grace, I want to encourage you to go back to the Lord and start on a new firm foundation
- Irrespective of what you’ve learned or what you've been taught. It is not too late. Go to the Lord and develop a heart for the
Lord. What is developing a heart for the Lord? It means coming before God, having a transparent relationship with Him,
saying, “Father, this is my life. Show me where I’ve been misled and been kept busy with things that are/were not of You, and
what have kept me totally unproductive for the Kingdom of Jesus.” It means going before Him and saying, Father God, I have
come to the realization, when looking back on my life, that this and that is what I’ve produced compared to what I could have
produced. It is saying, Father, I will hide nothing from You, so that by Your light, You can show me the darkness of my world,
and that Your light can shine in the darkest corner of my heart so that I can cleanse it. When I’ve cleansed my heart, I will then
be ready to receive God’s word. I can then go before Him, and He will fill me with the knowledge of His will – His purpose for
my life, because my heart will have to be filled again. It means a complete sweeping of the house, the heart. We need to come
before our Father fully prepared for a complete shifting of our paradigms.
When you are prepared to open yourself before the Lord, Holy Spirit has the freedom to show you where you are going wrong –
or going right. But where there is darkness and shadows there is no light. Where there’s no light, there’s no revelation, no
understanding. There’s no forgiveness. If you cannot understand where you are wrong, you cannot ask for forgiveness.
Sometimes we just don’t want to show our hearts to Him because it might oppose our will, but if you let the will of God flood
the darkness of your hearts, it will change your lives. It will change your circumstances, because then the will of God has
freedom to flow into you in order to produce a Divine harvest. And the fruits are there for your enjoyment!
God is the Lord of the Harvest, and He will fill your heart with “The Word” harvest – Jesus Christ. It is in knowing Him that you
discover yourself, your intended destiny, and can begin living and walking each and every day with a heart truly dedicated to
God, producing the Divine harvest not only for your own life, but for the Kingdom.
Remember finally James 1:25 (Ampl): “But he who looks carefully in to the faultless law, the (law) of liberty, and is faithful to it
and perseveres in looking into it, being not a heedless listener who forgets, but an active doer (who obeys) he shall be
blessed in his doing – in his life of obedience.”
are YOU on?
